"Wow! What fun, love, joy. I felt the love and healing atmosphere-so
great for our children to hear from others what we are trying to teach them
at home."

What is the National Leadership Council?
The National Leadership Council (NLC) is a multi-year leadership program, dedicated to fostering spiritual growth, leadership qualities, and a service perspective on life. In the process, NLC is developing a core group of young people who will be active in church, DiscoveryBound chapters, at CS camps, and throughout the country and world demonstrating the efficacy of Christian Science in personal, educational, and career pursuits. "Our watchwords are Truth and Love; and if we abide in those, they will abound in us, and we shall be one in heart, motive, purpose, pursuit." Mis. 135:7
We are now accepting applications for our fourth class which will commence in 2008 with 15-20 participants.
The NLC will provide opportunities for young people to discover and explore their interests, values, and talents in an atmosphere conducive to the recognition of the practicality and effectiveness of Christian Science through:
- Programs that help individuals deepen their relationship with God
- Activities which stress the healing effectiveness of Christian Science
- Conscious leadership built on a Biblical model of service to God and mankind.
- Leadership opportunities at the local, national, and international level.
Over four years, students will have the opportunity to partake in leadership training, aid in designing and implementing regional and national DiscoveryBound programs, participate in monthly teleconference calls, attend a 10-14 day summer program, be involved in service activities, and work on the national Congressional Award (www.congressionalaward.org). Students will be paired with an adult CS mentor who will shepherd them through the different elements of the curriculum. Specific aspects of each year of the program include:
Year One Servant Leadership (9th graders)
- Explore the servant-leadership model during a CS summer camp session
- Attend a national DiscoveryBound event over Memorial Day weekend
- Be active in a local DiscoveryBound chapter where appropriate
- Begin work toward Congressional Award
Year Two Ethics Essentials (10th graders)
- Experience as a team an adventure trip (such as whitewater rafting, long-distance cycling or backpacking in the wilderness), while exploring the essential elements of ethical decision-making
- Play a larger role as volunteers/leaders at home, in church, w/DiscoveryBound
- Continue leadership training and work on Congressional Award
Year Three Leadership in Action (11th graders)
- Reinforce key leadership principles while planning and attending a 10-14 day service trip and serve needs in such areas as an inner-city or reservation location.
- Create and implement a community service project and continue to achieve a new level of the Congressional Award
- Consider Mother Church and local branch church membership
Year Four Leading in Christian Science (12th graders)
- During the summer following the 11th grade, serve as a Counselor-In-Training at a Christian Science camp, as a TMC intern, or in another local, national, or international leadership role that serves to promote the practical, daily demonstration of Christian Science
- Implement one significant activity for the Christian Science community with the help of a mentor
Teens will enter the program prior to their ninth grade year, with a stringent initial screening process and reapplication will be necessary each following year.
All NLC classes will meet together annually over Martin Luther King holiday weekend.
