As summer jumps into high gear, with long sunny days and warm nights…we’re thinking of you.    The quarantine restrictive guidelines have provided us new opportunities to develop different plans for getting together with our friends and families. There are some activities we’d like to share with you and hope that you will pass them onto your local Groups/Chapters and friends.  

Staying at home has presented us with opportunities to think of new ways to support our local DiscoveryBound Groups.  We want to let you know we’ve scheduled a special evening of fun. So, get your calendars out and mark this date. This evening is for everyone to join in, so please share this information with your DB Group/Chapter, and friends.

DB Outreach: New England – National Event Alternative In-Person Gathering

Join us for an in-person gathering at Hopkinton State Park for teens (grades 8th-12th) and separate track for adults for a fun day of water activity, short hike, inspiration and discussion sessions.  Meet new friends and enjoy the outdoors!  We are offering this event outdoors so that we can follow state guidelines and regulations regarding social distancing and group gatherings.
There is a maximum of 10 adults at  picnic site due to the MA restrictions and guidelines.

Adult Activity
Outdoor lunch at Bill’s Pizzeria then head to Hopkinton State Park.  Discussion session on Tom McElroy’s talk from Friday night.  We will enjoy the trails and water activity (SUP, kayaking, canoeing, quad pedal boating)
We will share about the Asher Student Foundation.

$30 per person includes daily parking fee, all water activities, and lunch at Bill’s Pizzeria
Financial aid is available up to $15 per person.
If we have to cancel due to new restrictions or weather conditions there will be a full refund

What to bring:
Bag lunch & drink, water bottle for activities, comfortable clothing for water sports and/or short hike, mask, chair

Join us for our National Event alternative this year in Colorado!  This one-day event is still for teens (grades 8-12) and adults.  Get ready for a fun day of climbing in a ropes course, discussion sessions, inspiration and fellowship!  Come meet new friends and enjoy the outdoors in beautiful Colorado!  We are offering this event outdoors to comply with state guidelines and regulations regarding social distancing and group gatherings.

most high-profile households in the world: The home of
the Discoverer, Founder, and Leader of Christian Science.
Heather will also relate some of the surprising discoveries
that came to light during the research process, and share
insights about the important work that Mary Baker Eddy
completed during her three fruitful years at Chestnut Hill.

Have you heard of the childhood book called, Stone Soup by Marcia Brown?
We are using this as an example of coming together for fellowship and sharing some soup in a Thanksgiving manner.  Each of you will be given the recipe to make on our own ahead of time.  Feel free to add or delete some food items to your liking.  Make sure you are ready when the call starts so that you can enjoy your soup while we have a gratitude session.

You and/or your family must be in the photos, too, but it’s totally worth it to win some fun Christmas prizes, and spread holiday cheer with the larger DiscoveryBound community. 

The contest has multiple categories, and there will be a winner from each age group in each category.

Kick off the holidays with some easy crafts for preschool to elementary school age children.  These crafts will need parental supervision.

We’re planning for this activity to last about an hour and we have four ornaments/decorations we’ll be working on. We don’t expect to get them all done, so you can continue to work on your projects after we finish.

The search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) has so far only looked for technology in space.  But is there a way to tell if the message itself is intelligent?  Dr. Doyle will share some of his research into the communication system of the humpback whales with the idea of coming up with an intelligence filter for SETI.  He will also share a bit of the metaphysics behind his involvement with this research.

About Dr. Laurance Doyle:

Dr. Doyle was raised along the California coast in the small town of Cambria. He attended San Diego State University and after receiving his Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in astronomy, he worked as an engineer with the Voyager spacecrafts in the Space Image Processing Group at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He thereafter received his PhD from the University of Heidelberg in Germany in 1987 on radiative transfer modeling of Saturn’s rings using Voyager spacecraft imaging data. Since 1987 he has been a Principal Investigator with the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California where his main projects have been the photometric detection of extrasolar planets, and the application of information theory to animal communications. He has been a visiting Lecturer at the University of California, Santa Cruz teaching classes on Life in the Universe, and Light & Optics, and has more than one hundred refereed papers  in the scientific literature. He was a Member of the NASA Kepler Mission Science Team  with responsibility for detection of extrasolar planets around double star systems and found the first such circumbinary planet. He has taught quantum physics,  thermodynamics, introductory astronomy, history of science and Native American history at Principia College in Illinois, and was the Director of the Institute for the Metaphysics of Physics at Principia College from 2014 to 2019. He was on the Christian Science Board  of Lectureship for over a decade, doing the first video lecture, and has been a  contributing editor for the Christian Science Sentinel, the Christian Science Journal, and  the Christian Science Monitor. He has addressed 21 Christian Science Associations in the  US, Europe, Asia and Oceania.

Come join DiscoveryBound Outreach for a cozy weekend at the A/U Ranches!
This is a wonderful opportunity to relax and have fun while enjoying the company of other Christian Scientists and friends of all ages. Take part in sledding, snowshoeing, games, cards, crafts in the lodge, and much more. Or just bring a good book, sit by the fire, and enjoy a mug of hot chocolate.  Feel free to do as few or as many activities as you want…but come be a part of the fun!

WHEN: Friday, March 5 – Sunday, March 7, 2021

WHERE: A/U Ranches, Buena Vista, CO

WHO: All-Ages: This exciting weekend is for all ages.  All youth must be accompanied by a parent/guardian, since child care is not provided.  Families will be housed and eat together conforming to current protocols for groups coming together in Colorado.

WHAT:  Great weekend in the Colorado Mountains with beautiful scenery, amazing food and great fellowship with others participants.

COST: $99 per person (included in the cost are all meals beginning with Friday dinner through Sunday lunch, lodging, and most activities.)

FINANCIAL AID: If needed, up to $49 in financial aid is available for everyone. To apply for financial aid click on the link above.

TRAVEL: Please plan to arrive at the A/U Ranches between 5-7pm on Friday, March 5. The departure time will be on Sunday, March 7 at 1pm.  DiscoveryBound will not be providing transportation to or from the Ranches.

CANCELLATION POLICY: If for some reason you need to cancel, you may do so up until Friday, February 12, 2021 with a $50 cancellation fee. No refunds will be given after February 12.

Special note: If DiscoveryBound cancels a program/event, you will receive a full refund of the registration fee. (If a participant decides to cancel a registration then the cancellation policy for that specific DiscoveryBound event / program applies.)

Target group: All ages (Space is limited)

Join us for a fun, creative and inspiring hour of watercolor painting with Kelly Foxton.

Description:  During this class Kelly will guide you through the step-by-step process of creating two simple, beautiful watercolour paintings.  No previous experience is necessary.
Required materials:
– one 8″x10″ sheet of watercolor paper (for best results use140 lb. cold pressed watercolor paper)
– one soft bristled, medium sized watercolor paint brush
– watercolor paint (if using liquid watercolors from a tube, you will need a plastic lid or pie plate to mix colors on)
– masking tape
– flat, hard surface or drawing board
– pencil
– table salt

The metaphysical theme that Kelly has been working with in preparation for this class is “Love the incentive” (marginal heading found on page 454 of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy).

About Kelly…
     Kelly Foxton is a self taught Canadian artist.  She was raised in rural Ontario surrounded by farms and forests.  It was there that she developed a deep sense of respect and admiration for the beauty and innate spirituality of the natural world.
     Kelly works in a wide variety of artistic styles and mediums ranging from highly detailed, realistic pencil drawings, to loosely executed landscape impressionism and color studies in watercolor and pastel.
     She is best known for her work as a wildlife artist and author/illustrator of the children’s book titled “Mother Nature Knows…” 
     Kelly currently lives with her husband and the youngest of her three children near Bear River, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Come join Florida DB groups for a day of fun, sun, and inspiration! This year it will be a one-day event where you can enjoy a morning of kayaking with the manatees and dolphins with A Day Away Kayak Tours in Titusville followed by hanging out at Jetty Park Beach, lunch, games and an inspirational speaker.

Inspirational Speaker –  Michael Brown – US Navy Chaplain
A Christian Science Chaplain with the US Navy, Michael has spent the last decade serving with Navy and Marine Corps units across the country and deployed overseas.  After graduating from Principia College in 2003, he returned to his childhood home near Seattle and worked with a law firm to develop programs for ethics and integrity in public policy.  His love of aviation led him next to work at a regional seaplane airline, where he served as flight operations director and station manager at the company’s Seattle seaplane terminal.  In 2009, Michael joined The Mother Church’s Chaplain Training Program and began his graduate studies at the Boston University School of Theology, graduating in 2012 with a Masters of Divinity and a specialization in mediation and conflict resolution.  Michael then entered active duty service as a staff Chaplain at Naval Station Norfolk, VA.  In 2016, his next assignment took him to the high desert of Twentynine Palms, CA, where he served with US Marine Corps units, including 1st Tank Battalion and 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines, with which he deployed to support Operations Inherent Resolve and Enduring Freedom in Iraq, Syria, Kuwait, Jordan, and Afghanistan.  In the fall of 2018, he transitioned to serve as Command Chaplain onboard the guided missile cruiser, USS LAKE CHAMPLAIN in San Diego, CA.  Michael Currently serves with the Naval Submarine Support Center at Kings Bay, GA.  He is blessed to be joined in these adventures by his wife, Lane, and children William and Ruth. 

WHO:  Christian Scientists of all ages and their friends of all faiths.
(All youth must be accompanied by a parent/guardian)

A Day Away Kayak Tours in Titusville, FL (kayaking)
9:00 a.m.  Meet at Haulover Canal (directions to launch site will be sent)
Jetty Park (bring your own lunch, inspirational speaker, games, beach)
1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Jetty Park, 400 Jetty Park Rd. Cape Canaveral, FL

$5 per person
– inspirational talk/pavilion rental (bring your own lunch)
$30 per person
– guided kayak tour includes tip (5 & older) optional activity

Space may be limited! (currently the maximum of people gathering at Jetty Park is 50)
Currently tent camping is closed but we are able to use the group rented pavilions for our afternoon activity.
