DB Outreach: Maine Adventure Trip for Adults @ Adventure Bound

Who: Christian Science adults of all ages and friends of all faiths

What: Explore breathtaking landscapes while rafting the Kennebec River, hike to the stunning Moxie Falls, experience kayaking and stand up paddle boards and enjoy wilderness camping under the stars. Disconnect from devices and take the time to connect with CS adults and your friends of all faiths from across the country for an Adventure in Maine’s vacation destination. We have all the adventures and challenges you’ll love. In addition to great adventures, base camp is no ordinary base camp.  You will even get a chance to have Lobster if you would like!  This guided multi-day trip is inspiring and all inclusive* – all you need to do is have the time of your life in the great outdoors.

Travel: The program starts and finishes in Caratunk, Maine. Base camp (Adventure Bound) is approximately 2.5 hours from Portland, ME and about 4.5 hours from Boston, MA. A DB shuttle is available to/from Portland, ME airport for an additional fee: $25 one way ($50 for round-trip).  Please see the Travel Form above to give us your transportation information.

DB Shuttle:
July 20, 2019 – Departs Portland, ME Airport at 1:15pm to arrive at Base Camp by 4:00pm (arrive into PWM by 12:30 p.m.)
July 24, 2019 – Depart Base Camp at 10:15am to arrive at Portland, ME Airport by 1:00pm (depart PWM after 2:30 p.m.)

Accommodations: Gender-based bunkhouses for 3 nights and gender based tents for camp-out for 1 night or bring a tent to stay with spouse during the weekend.

Level of Activity – need to be an active adult since we will be camping and white water rafting as the main activity.
There will be a licensed Maine guide in each raft when we go on the class III-IV white water rafting.  Short hike to Moxie Falls.

Financial Aid
Thanks to recent generous donations, DiscoveryBound is now able to offer scholarships to adults attending DB events and programs. DB can even help with up to $150 towards registration and/or up to $150 towards travel costs. Do not let finances stop you from attending this DB event! Let us know if you have a need and we will get back with you in regards to next steps.  The link to the Financial Aid form can be found at the top of this page.

Cancellation Policy
Refunds less a $290 cancellation fee, will be given to participants canceling by Wednesday, July 3rd. No refunds will be issued after this date and you will be responsible for the full registration fee.

9:00 am Meet with your guides to discuss and prepare for your day of a morning hike to Moxie Falls and an afternoon of Kayaking on the Lower Kennebec River.
10:00 am Scenic Hike to Moxie Falls. Take an Adventure Bound bus shuttle to the trail head to Moxie Falls, Maine’s largest waterfall. This relaxing hike has great view and swimming opportunities in the natural pools above the falls.
12:00 pm Break for a picnic lunch
12:30 pm Explore the Lower Kennebec River using 2-person inflatable kayaks and stand-up paddle boards.
3:30 pm Return to Adventure Bound and utilize the adventure center
5:30 pm Dinner
7:00 pm Informal Church Service outdoors

8:30 am 2-day Kennebec whitewater rafting orientation.  Day 1 adventures consist of introductory rapids in smaller 8-ft. self-guided rafts along the East Outlet of the Kennebec River just below Moosehead Lake, with Adventure Bound staff providing support from kayaks and leading the way.  Stopping at  Ledge Falls for a picnic lunch and fun at the falls.  From there you continue on a motorboat shuttle to their remote (boat access only) campsite on Indian Pond.  The campsite will have tents and sleeping pads provided for us. Enjoy a cheese/cracker/pepperoni snack along with veggies and dip while the guides prepare dinner.

Wilderness sauna and a refreshing swim in the pond before a nighttime snack of s’mores around the campfire.

7:30 am Depart by motorboat shuttle to Harris Station dam for Day 2 adventures for a 12-mile descent of the Kennebec river gorge with class III-IV whitewater.  Each raft (16-ft in length) of approx. 6-9 paddlers will be accompanied by a licensed Maine whitewater guide. Following the upper gorge section of rafting in the morning, we will stop along the banks of the river for a riverside barbecue.
3:30 pm Rafting trip concludes with a photo and video presentation of your rafting trip by Adventure Bound.

What: Teens will visit the Santa Monica Beach, Hollywood Walk of Fame, have a pool party, and enjoy workshops from actual industry professionals who are also Christian Scientists.
Adults will visit the Griffith Observatory, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and Walk of Fame.

Everyone will get to tour Warner Brothers Studios!  You won’t want to miss this!

This is a wonderful opportunity to explore a wide variety of family-friendly outdoor activities, plus  many natural and historic sights with 3,200 acres.  The weekend will include a Swiss cable car ride to the summit, hiking, scenic railroad, water sports like canoeing, kayaking & SUP, reserved terrace seating for Lasershow Night Spectacular, BBQ dinner & inspirational speaker, Pumpkin Festival and much more. Come join us for a weekend in Estes Park outside of Rocky Mountain National Park! This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about photography while enjoying some of the best Rocky Mountain National park has to offer. The weekend will include inspiration, fun, Sunday School, a workshop by Sam Sensor on photography, making new friends, hiking to some iconic lakes in the park including Bierstadt and Sprague Lake, and enjoying everything the YMCA has to offer. Teens you won’t want to miss this amazing weekend! Space is limited.

WHEN: Friday, November 8, 2019 6:00 p.m. – Sunday, November 10, 2019 12:30 p.m.

WHO: Christian Science 7th thru 12th Graders and their friends of all faiths.

WHERE: YMCA Estes Park, 2515 Tunnel Rd, Estes Park, CO

COST:  $99.00 per person includes a two night stay at the Estes Park YMCA, all meals, free admission to Rocky Mountain National Park, a photography workshop by Sam Sensor, and onsite activities at the YMCA including roller blading.

FINANCIAL AID:   Teens (parents) may apply for financial aid through DiscoveryBound as part of the registration process.  Assistance for teens is up to $70 for registration, and up to $200 for air travel finances, and is granted on a first come, first served basis.  For additional assistance, you are welcome to reach out to a local branch church or DiscoveryBound Chapter, or to fund raise independently. Please reach out to us if the amount stated above doesn’t meet your needs. Our goal is for finances to never be an obstacle for teens to join us for an event.

Cancellation Fee: $29 registration cancellation fee if cancelled by October 17, 2019. After October 17, 2019 there are no refunds.

Come join DiscoveryBound for a cozy weekend at the A/U Ranches! This is a wonderful opportunity to relax and have fun while enjoying the company of other Christian Scientists and friends of all ages. Take part in sledding, broom hockey, climbing in the Rock Gym, snowshoeing, games and cards in the lodge and much more. Or just bring a good book, sit by the fire and enjoy a mug of hot chocolate.  Feel free to do as few or as many activities as you want, but come be a part of the fun!

CANCELED Jetty Park All-Ages Kayaking/Camping Weekend in Cape Canaveral

As of today, March 18, Adventure Unlimited (including DiscoveryBound) is stopping all work travel and in-person events until April 1st.  At that time we will determine if additional steps need to be taken for the month of April. This means that our DB Annual Jetty Park weekend is canceled. I got a call from Jetty Park campground today (March 18th) and they are closing starting tomorrow at noon until further notice. We have been working with the following citation from II Timothy, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

Here is a possible alternative activity for our Jetty Park Weekend canceled event:
Challenge for you: Bring Jetty Park Home! Send us a photo or short video of a beach or camping activity (ie. S’mores, tenting in your backyard) with your family and/or small group of friends to share on DiscoveryBound social media. Text to Lori Selby at 781-956-9035.

Please know that we are still planning and registering for future inspiring and fun events to take place this year. The DiscoveryBound Outreach team will assess the current situation on a regular basis.

DB Outreach Colorado Adult Backpacking Trip @ A/U Ranches

Have you wanted to hike through what is affectionately called “God’s Country” in Colorado?   Have you wanted to spend the night under the Colorado sky without any city lights interfering with the view? Have you wanted to be on top of the world, above treeline with a 360 degree view of the Rocky Mountains?  Join an experienced back-country guide, a DB staff member, and a C.S. practitioner on an adventure through the majestic beauty of the Rocky Mountains.  Learn and practice back-country skills while hiking, camping, and attempting to peak a “Fourteener”.  Experience the feeling of achieving your goals in the outdoors with the support of other Christian Science adults and their friends of all faiths.

CANCELLATION POLICY

Full payment is due at sign up (unless applying for registration financial aid – up to $150 per person available).

If you decide to cancel your trip, the following fees apply and are due when we receive notice of your cancellation:
Up to 22 days (June 21) prior to departure = 50% of the total trip cost is non-refundable
June 22nd = No refund deadline, 100% of cost is non-refundable

If DiscoveryBound cancels a program/event, you will receive a full refund of the registration fee. (If a participant decides to cancel a registration then the cancellation policy for that specific DiscoveryBound event / program applies.) As you are preparing air travel for these excursions, we encourage you to book flights allowing you the greatest flexibility in case there is a need.

What to expect

This trip is rated Vigorous. In the wilderness participants will be carrying their own backpacks with weights of 35 to 40 lbs up a gentle slope over a three mile distance. On peak day you will experience steep and rocky terrain with constant and dramatic elevation gain and/or loss exceeding 3,000′ or more (on peak day full pack not required but optional). In preparation, it is suggested for you to do day hiking with 35 to 40 lbs in the pack you intend to hike with on the trip and make sure your hiking boots are broken in. These practices will help to ensure a safe and successful trip. This is not a beginning backpacking trip. Previous experience is highly recommended.

Daytime temperatures usually range between 60° to 80° F, with evening temperatures dropping into the 40s to 50s. You may encounter freezing temperatures at some of the higher elevations. Afternoon thunderstorms are a distinct possibility so adequate rain gear is important.

Meet your back-country guide

Rusty is an avid outdoors-man.  He has peaked almost 40 of Colorado’s Fourteeners and spent many days on solo backpacking trips through the Rockies as well as backpacked with friends.  Rusty has many years experience training back-country skills in the Collegiate Peaks of Colorado for the staff at A/U Ranches in Buena Vista.  He has led numerous backpacking trips for the Ranches as well as for friends. Rusty maintains a  Wilderness First Aid certificate.  He is a middle-school teacher at Embark Education in Denver and is the Head Coach for the High School Mountain Bike Team which he helped start 4 years ago at the Compass Montessori School in Golden, Co.  Rusty has been a competitive runner most of his life and loves to be outdoors.  The mountains are his favorite place to be.

the DB National Event at CedarS camps has been cancelled for 2020


After much discussion, evaluation, and humble prayer, we have decided to not proceed with the in-person event at this time. This was not an easy discussion for the DB Outreach and Compass team, and we spent many meetings evaluating our options, but ultimately, we feel this is the right decision. A few of the reasons behind this decision include concerns about travel, group lodging, large group gatherings, and the hindrance on the way we would want to run this event with regard to Christian Science.
We are so grateful for the support of the CedarS staff in making this decision.  They understand this is a very different year for everyone, and fully support our reasoning. We are considering the possibility of partnering together for this event in an upcoming year. 
The Outreach team is already exploring other options for how to reach teens and adults this fall in a meaningful, fun, and inspiring way to take the place of the National Event this year.  We encourage you to check back here soon to see what kind of regional activities are available!

Join us for an in-person gathering at Hopkinton State Park for teens (grades 8th-12th) and separate track for adults for a fun day of water activity, short hike, inspiration and discussion sessions.  Meet new friends and enjoy the outdoors!  We are offering this event outdoors so that we can follow state guidelines and regulations regarding social distancing and group gatherings.
There is a maximum of 10 adults at  picnic site due to the MA restrictions and guidelines.

Join us for our National Event alternative this year in Colorado!  This one-day event is still for teens (grades 8-12) and adults.  Get ready for a fun day of climbing in a ropes course, discussion sessions, inspiration and fellowship!  Come meet new friends and enjoy the outdoors in beautiful Colorado!  We are offering this event outdoors to comply with state guidelines and regulations regarding social distancing and group gatherings.
