Page to Screen: Discussing “Remarkably Bright Creatures”
Book vs. Movie!
First a book… now a movie! Join us to discuss the movie version of one of our recent DB Four Season Book Club selections, Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt (2022).
Remarkably Bright Creatures is a novel about a widow, Tova, who forms an unlikely friendship with a giant Pacific octopus named Marcellus at the aquarium where she works. The story follows Tova’s quiet life and her quest to solve the mystery of her son’s disappearance decades earlier, with Marcellus using his intelligence to help her uncover the truth, alongside the story of a young man, Cameron, who is searching for his father. It’s a heartwarming, character-driven story about loneliness, grief, family, and finding connection in unexpected places, praised for its unique narrative voice and emotional depth. The feature-length film (PG-13), starring Sally Field as Tova and Alfred Molina as Marcellus, debuts on Netflix Friday, May 8th.
